Firstly, the movies used to come without voice or silent short movies. The first Indian full length silent movie was Raja Harishchandra released on April 21, 1913, produced and directed by DadaSaheb Phalke. The film took 6 months 27 days with a reel length of 1100m (approx four reels) and complied into a film of 40 minutes.

The first Indian sound film was Alam Ara released on March 14, 1931. The movie was produced by Imperial Movietone and directed by Ardeshir Irani with a running time of 124 mins. The movie was released in Hindi and Urdu language with a budget 390 Million INR ($5.4 million) and collected 2.89 Billion INR ($40 million).

The first Indian sound and colored movie was Kisan Kanya released on 1937 with a run time of 137 mins, produced by Ardeshir Irani and directed by Moti B. Gidwani in Hindi Language.
